He's a piece of work, for sure.

Quote
As noted by the Detroit Free Press, a post on Rivals affiliate TheWolverine.com reports that Michigan is planning to spend the final week of football spring practice in Rome, Italy. The team would not only practice several times on Italian soil, but would allow the team to visit the sights in the area and even leave players in Europe to study abroad for a semester.

The move would no doubt ruffle even more feathers in the football and NCAA communities after Harbaugh famously took the Wolverines to the IMG Academy down in Florida for spring practice last March. That prompted recent legislation that was passed at the NCAA convention in Nashville this week — a Harbaugh Rule if you will — that prohibited off-campus practice during a vacation period outside of a playing season.

I guess Harbaugh will be recruiting Italians out of their own back yard. As hairless as his chest is, he better leave his shirt on if he doesn't want to be laughed out of the coliseum.

I'm no fan of Harbo but anybody that sticks it to the NZAA will get at least one hand clap from me.

Can't see this being very effective practice though.  Will they have a spring game?

(Sorry, didn't bother to read the article...)

He will be spending a lot of money to take a staff & players to Italy. Plus, every player will need a passport.

If every player needs a passport then we'll know if they have any crooks on the team. RTR!

IMO he is looking for a recruiting advantage. Come play for Michigan and you get free trips to Europe. To me this is an extra benefit.

The NCAA defines an extra benefit as any special arrangement by an institution employee or a representative of the institution’s athletic interest (“Booster”) to provide a student-athlete (or a student-athlete’s relative or friend) a benefit that is not generally available to other students and their relatives and/or friends, or, is not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation.

According to this they have to get NCAA approval or take the entire student body.

During Ray Perkins era we had a player from South Georgia die during practice. The team flew to New Jersey to play Ohio State in the "Kickoff Classic" On the way home the plane landed in Columbus, GA to allow the players and coaches to attend their teammates funeral. The NCAA considered this an extra benefit because the University did not offer/provide all students transportation to the funeral. The NCAA finally dropped the case and nothing happened.

Right.  We can't have an athletic dorm any more, yet somehow he can take his entire team to Europe on vacation.
