South Carolina acknowledged Monday the school received a notice of allegations from the NCAA regarding possible violations by its football program and other sports.

The charges spelled out by the NCAA include claims that 12 student-athletes received an estimated $47,000 in impermissible benefits from a local hotel through reduced rent and that nine players received special arrangements to pay at a later date.

It is also alleged that two people deemed representatives of the school made impermissible contact with recruits and provided them impermissible benefits. The violations were said to have occurred between spring 2009 and February 2011.

When I saw a new notice listed, I thought it would be LSU.  I'm surprised they're not yet on the list.

How dumb, how dumb, how dumb, can these kids be. I know they have been covered more than once by their coaches about any free or special deals on anything.  Huh?

I was in the dark about this until I read it today. I follow college sporting news fairly well but didn't hear about this.

Yes, during the winter it was revealed that they were being investigated.  But it looked less severe than this.  This has the look of widespread problems in several sports.  We're talking loss of scholarships and some lost playing time (for those involved) or worse (if they dig up anything else).

The NCAA's allegations also included dealings with the Student Athlete Mentoring Foundation, its president Steve Gordon and its treasurer Kevin Lahn -- both South Carolina graduates.

Earlier this month, the NCAA suspended freshman receiver Damiere Byrd four games and ordered him to repay $2,700 in impermissible benefits before he can play for the Gamecocks. Byrd's father, Adrian, is a vice president with the foundation.

The NCAA "can blackball me forever," Gordon said Monday by phone. "I'm trying to get inner-city kids to college."

How noble.  Odd that all of his inner-city kids happen to be elite athletes.

Not a recruit.

Not a recruit.

Sorry to hi-jack here, but college is available to everyone who has the will to do so (exceptions here may be young people who are supporting their mother and/or younger siblings, but these are special circumstances).  They LOVE to give out student loans and poor kids get pell grants too.  It's easier to have an excuse than to go do it.

Not a recruit.

She is Gabriel something. She played in the movie 'Precious' and had a nomination for an Academy award for her role. I didn't see the film.

Now here is the inner city kid that Pres Gordon is so worried about. I believe he had 30 scholarship offers.

I know you're just having fun, but Clowney isn't involved (according to reports).  This was in the works while he was being recruited, and it was one reason that Bama had a chance at him (with this hanging over USCe).
