Hello all,

I am kind of bored today so i thought why not start a topic and see if we can get some talk going.

I have mentioned this in the past and I think HScoach commented on it a little so maybe he can chime back in and add to the discussion.

Our DB's over the past 5 or 6 years have had a lot of problems with guys out jumping them for a ball that the Qb's (Manzel, Kelly, Watson) seem to just throw up and let the Wr go get it. Some one mentioned about it being the way they are taught. That the DB's are taught to watch the Wr's eyes then make a play. Well, I don't think that is working. I will say that our Safetys have gotten better at intercepting the ball (eddie jackson and Minka).

So is this just something Saban has decided he can live with or is it the players?
I wish we had the Antino Langham type guy with long arms and a knack for finding the ball. We have real good talent but i wouldn't say we have a shut down corner. We have a head hunter at saftey in Harrison and he worries me that he will get a targeting every game.

Anyway, What say you?  don't just give me the "in Saban we trust" line. I do trust coach but i also see a weakness.

I have been saying the same thing for a few years now.  I honestly expected much more from Marlon Humphrey while he was here.  He did fine, but I was expecting him to surpass Langham before he left.  When we signed him and Tony Brown in the same class I thought they would shut down all receivers for several years, but that just didn't happen.

There is an obvious problem with the DBs. The last real shutdown corner was Dre Kirkpatrick. The kids that CNS recruits are fast and athletic, and should excel more than they do. If there is anyone who is reading this that says they haven't yelled "TURN AROUND!" to one of our DBs trying to make a play, you have not watched a Bama game in a while. That's the only part of the "process" that seems to be lacking.

Give some of those receivers credit.

Manzel threw to Mike Evans 6-5 225 7th pick in 1st round.
Kelly threw to LaQuan Threadwell 6-3 216 23rd pick in 1st round.
Watson threw to Mike Williams 6-3 205 7th pick in 1st round.

I think our corners are pretty good. Most pass plays we give up are well defended. If the QB puts the ball in the right spot it is almost impossible to defend against an all-conference type WR.

I scream turn your head around too. I am glad I do not have to try and run stride for stride with a WR with 4.40 speed with my head turned looking backwards. Giving up an explosive play is bad. Giving up a TD is worse.

Who is the last starting corner we had that did not get drafted?

Probably why CNS didn't recruit you.

This has been one of my complaints for several years.  Our DB just don't locate the ball very well, and even when they do, it's usually at the last instant when they don't have much time to react.  This makes it easier for them to get beaten on the play.

In the draft coverage, I noticed how several of the DBs from other schools frequently  located the ball before it got to the receiver.

I don't see this changing so we might as well get ready for another season of yelling "Turn your head!!!"

Saban knows best. Saban never makes a mistake. I'm not going to second-guess Coach Saban. Saban knows what he's doing. In Saban We Trust.

Sound familiar?

Many times the ball was complete vs Clemson were balls thrown underneath.  They have been out jumped but also have been beat on the back shoulder throw.  When I coached corners, especially when they were playing against taller recs we would tell them not to go to knock down the ball, but go for the near arm to pull it away and the rec would have to make a one handed catch.  You also have to give credit to some of the QB's they have played.  They have made some very good throws over the last couple of years.  I will also say they have missed some chances for interceptions.

Haven't seen many NFL DBs out jump tall athletic receivers.

Yes i get that the Wr's were good. But these are 5* Db's also.

And some of the throws were just throw it and pray the Wr gets it, and they did. I know y'all all remeber manziel running around like crazy almost sacked and then he throws where no one was at (a sure INT) then all of a sudden here comes Mike Williams with 2 Db's just standing there and he makes a catch. (we won that game put man i was pissed.

Anyway I just think its the way they are told to play.
