Tide Basketball Starts Tuesday November 5-Coach Oats Interview

I am excited about the upcoming BB season. We open with a game against Penn in T-town.

He takes over a team led by Lewis, who averaged 13.5 points as a 17-year-old freshman and the second-youngest player on a Division I roster. Petty was the team's top 3-point shooter and Jones a top defender who's been working on his jump shot.

The backcourt also adds graduate transfer James "Beetle" Bolden , who averaged 12.2 points last season for West Virginia before a season-ending ankle injury.

Alabama lost forwards Juwan Gary and James Rojas likely for the season with preseason knee injuries. That gives an opportunity for Alex Reese to play a much bigger role. Oats said Jones and Petty both could play the position in smaller lineups.

It certainly should be interesting.  I'm giving Oats a year or two to get his team together.

They actually have an exhibition game against Ga Tech Sunday at Coleman. Unfortunately, we have to head back to SC early Sunday morning. Otherwise, I'd love to watch it.

Oats does not have his players in place yet but I still expect the team to be much improved. I think the offense will be fun to watch for the first time in years. The SEC has gotten much more difficult in recent years. Most experts are picking us about 6th in the conference. I expect us to be in the 4-8 range which is acceptable in Oats first year.

It’s all about showing improvement each year. Free throw and 3 point shooting come to mind. Also, constant movement and rebounding. And most importantly, consistency and not melting down late in the season.

Y'alls expectations may be a little low. Jamos texted me earlier today that in an exhibition game this afternoon at Coleman, Bama smoked Ga Tech, 93-65. And get this, Bama was 12-15 from the FT line.

The Tide shot 41.6 percent from the field(32-77), 45.9 percent on three-pointers (17-37), and 80 percent (12-15) on free throws. Tech was 25-58 from the field (43.1 percent), 5-18 on three-pointers (27.8 percent), and 10-17 (58.8 percent) on free throws.

The Tide was led by freshman guard Jaden Shackleford, who hit 6-13 field goals (6-10 on three-point shots) to finish with 21 points.

“Man, can he shoot the ball,” said Pastner.

Alabama soph Kira Lewis had 20 points and John Petty, Jr., 15. Those three accounted for 12-25 on three-point shots

Alabama was dominant on the backboards, out-rebounding Georgia Tech, 44 (including 12 offensive boards) to 32. Alex Reese and Petty led Bama with 7 rebounds each. Bama had the advantage in second chance points, 14-9, and in fast break points, 14-5.

The ladies BB team played an exhibition with AUM and beat them 105-16.

We have played GT in this game for several years now. To my knowledge this was our first win. I do think the GT program is regressing under Pastner. Starting Tuesday against Penn the games count. We have a good opportunity to pick up some good resume building wins with our difficult pre-conference schedule.
