Yes, Mr. Energy & Excitement is the Mens Basketball Coach of the Year.
This year’s national coach of the year has ties to Alabama.
Former Crimson Tide and current Dayton head coach Anthony Grant was named the Associated Press national coach of the year Tuesday.
Led by Grant, Dayton was 29-2 this season, 18-0 in Atlantic 10 conference play and was ranked No. 3 in the final AP poll.
In addition to Grant being named AP coach of the year, his star player — Obi Toppin — was selected as the AP national player of the year.
Of course, the Atlantic 10 ain’t the SEC. Also, their top player Obi Toppin was not even a big time recruit. The following programs offered him a scholarship: Fordham, UGA, Wyoming, Misses State, St. Bonaventure, etc. Let’s be honest, he was not developed by Anthony Grant, Toppin was hidden jewel and more power to Grant for signing him. Grant had 6 years at Alabama to show what he could do and he failed miserably. I have zero regrets that he was fired as our coach.
