Quote
The University of Missouri is heading down a path to join the Southeastern Conference, said a college official with direct knowledge of the situation.

The person said that Missouri’s decision to apply for membership to the SEC was “inevitable and imminent,” although a specific timeframe has yet to be set.

Missouri’s Board of Curators will meet on Thursday and Friday at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where the process of withdrawing from the Big 12 and applying to the SEC is expected to begin. While expansion is not listed on the agenda, there is an private session scheduled Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

After Missouri applies, the person said that it expects “no problems” with gathering enough votes among SEC presidents to become a member.

While the interim Big 12 commissioner, Chuck Neinas, said last week that he expected Missouri to play in the league in 2012, it is possible that they could start play in the SEC as early as next year.

Missouri would become the SEC’s 14th member; the league added Texas A&M in September. The SEC would certainly prefer 14 members, as scheduling is a much simpler process with two seven-team divisions.

SEC probably needs a 14th team more than it wants a 14th team. taking Mizzou doesn't kill the Big 12 so no blood on Slive's hands.

I just don't get it.  Why is SEC so interested in Mizzou?

Well, we already have Arky, 10RC, and Kentucky, so may be Slive is trying to corner the market on all the hillbillies?  Undecided

Hey now! Angry

I say there has already been an up or down vote, the straw poll Chech mentioned, but it was not a "no problem" situation at that time. The NYT likes people to think they're real smart and wield a lot of power. I say if it wasn't for their crossword puzzle, they'd all be out of work with the "Overthrow Wall Street" kooks.

I think it's about the $$$$.  St. Louis and Kansas City have huge TV markets.  Plus, I think there's an element of convenience.  Missouri wants out of the Big 12, can't go to the Big 10, and we need a 14th team to balance the divisions.  I haven't heard any rumors of any other teams wanting to join the SEC, so it's convenient for them to "settle" for the SEC and for the SEC to settle for Missouri.

Did the Big 10 turn down Missouri? Why can't they go if the Big 10 increases membership?

From what I remember reading, the Big 10 was not encouraging Missouri to apply for membership.  I'm not sure what all the politics were behind it.  From my understanding, the Big 10 didn't flat out turn them down, but basically discouraged them from applying for membership a couple of months back by saying that they had no plans to expand.  Dilution of revenue might have been one of the reasons behind it.  Click here for link
