After a quick glance, this Alabama team appears to be flawless. I am here to tell you, Capstonians, that there is one glaring flaw on the Alabama football team: kicking and punting.

In 2010, Mandell averaged 39.2 yards a punt, ranking the team 91st in the country in total punting. Mandell has shockingly digressed since last football season. The Tide is currently ranking 88th in the country in punting with a disappointing 38.8 yards per punt in 2011.

Meanwhile, Cade Foster and Jeremy Shelley lead the Tide’s kicking unit. Foster, known for being a strong kicker, is Alabama’s kickoff specialist. This “big leg” is ranked 98th in the country in touchbacks, amassing a grand total of one in 2011. He is also averaging 62.4 yards per kick, moving him into the top 80. Perhaps Foster’s greatest contribution can be found in kickoff coverage where he has already totaled 5 solo tackles. My suggestion is to keep him on kickoff, just find someone else to kick the football.

Possibly an even worse eventuality would be Cade and Cody suspended for beating the crap out of Jake Gray. Trying to embarrass them in the student paper, the week of the Tennessee game is only going to lead to things getting worse. The author decided to "get in our kicker's heads" at exactly the same time when we'll likely need them most. Nothing can be done this late in the season. All the other "no brainer" tidbits of punk wisdom could have waited until mid-January. If something does go bad due to kicking, I'm partially blaming Jake Gray.

Hopefully that will serve to motivate our kickers.

I know you're trying to see a bright side, Catch. Being optimistic certainly won't hurt anything now, so I appreciate your sentiment.  But if it was a matter as simple as "kick a little harder" I think it has been already tried. We'll see.

We can live with the length on punts provided that it is [1] consistent and [2] well covered so there is little to no runback.  What bothers me is the kickoff length and coverage.  Not much that can be done on the length so I hope team is focusing on improving k.o. coverage.  Hold 'em inside the 30 at the least.
