Quote
"This may be the best defense to ever play college football," Billy Neighbors said of the 2011 Alabama defense as he spoke to the Huntsville Quarterback Club Tuesday night.
"They've probably got the best secondary that's ever been there. Or ever been anywhere," Neighbors continued. "They've got three great linebackers and they've got four down guys that can play, too. It's unbelievable, really. I was shocked how good they are."

They are pretty good, aren't they?  Cheesy

Athletically it isn't even close.  The 2011 athlete is better than the 1961 athlete.  Stronger and faster.

Who played together better as a group is a debatable I guess.  I didn't see the '61 defense so I can't debate it.

I agree with HL except I would add bigger to go along with stronger and faster.

Billy Neighbors was an offensive lineman. I believe he was an All American in 1961.

 Huh?

Didn't see that coming!  Fitting with Gomer being a Bama alumnus.

I would say as many defenses that Billy neighbors has seen he would know the best when he seen it. RTR!

I almost didn't post it because I didn't want to bash him for no reason, but I thought it was funny.  Embarrassed

I saw them several times. They gave up 25 points the entire year, including a bowl game. Hard to beat that.

Offensive schemes now would run the 1960's defenses dizzy until they puked. Sorry.

didn't they have 5 or 6 shutouts that year ? a arkie field goal in the bowl game made it 25 points for the year
22 points allowed in 10 games ain't bad ...

Okay, the 1961 players could not measure up to this year's fast, muscular defense and maybe not opponent's offenses. You really can't compare era with era. If you hold opponents to 25 points all year, you've got a unbelievable defense. I wouldn't want somebody in the year 2024 to look back and say our guys this year couldn't compete in the game in 2024.
