Stanford’s thrilling 56-48 triple-overtime win over USC was an instant classic, preserving the Cardinal’s unbeaten season, 16-game winning streak and BcS title hopes all in one fell swoop.

The game wasn’t without its controversy, however.

With nine seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 34, Matt Barkley hit sophomore Robert Woods on a screen pass at the 40-yard line and near the right sideline.  With time ticking away, Woods ran clear across the field and went down at around the 33 as the clock hit double zeros.  And then all confusing hell broke loose.

I don't even remember if it was against or for USCw, but there was another controversial call earlier in the game. The announcers were talking about it not even being a reviewable infraction, but the officials overturned a call on the field.

I missed the earlier call.  But during the final minutes, when Kiff was out on the field whining to the officials, his team stood alone on the sidelines.  OT was about to start, and they were just standing and waiting.  His crap may have cost them the game, even though they made it to triple OT before losing.

So it seems.  I'm just glad he's over there in someone else's face.  Don't you know his Dad, who is still coaching the USCw D (Monte, right?), keeps thinking... "Had we only disciplined him about that crybaby issue...".

Head referee Michael Batlan released a statement following the game that referenced Kiffin's allegation.

"Any coach can ask for a timeout, but he doesn't get one until an official grants or signifies it," Batlan said. "I was not a part of any conversation or meeting with regards to a requested timeout."

He is misery looking for company. Maybe the officials will give him two extra timeouts in the next game for USCw because he got screwed over so bad.  Huh?

I don't like Kiffin but the calls in this game sure seemed to go Stanford's way.

I think the article completely and accurately summarizes that the USC player should have gone upfield, or immediately fallen, instead of running across the field.  That is a coaching/time management issue.  A timeout isn't a timeout until it is called and recognized, and 1 second is never enough to ensure a clock stoppage unless the player was out of bounds before the clock expired, which he wasn't.  The refs got this right, the USC receiver messed up, and Little Lane is just a crybaby.

I didn't realize it was possible for a coach to call a timeout before a play and get it afterwards without actually signaling for it after the play.  Even if the knee touched with 1 second to go that isn't enough to stop the clock under normal conditions.

Oh, and most importantly - if he'd been more involved with his players reminding them how to play with 9 seconds left, they would've likely had 2-3 seconds to work with for a FG.

Yep, USCw just botched the last play. They could have called a play that was a sideline pattern for 5-10 more yds and would have had a couple of secs left but they didn't.
