In a critical battle for field position, special teams could be the key

TUSCALOOSA -- The defenses are special. Alabama running back Trent Richardson is special. The coaches are special.

But what about the special teams?

When No. 2 Alabama clashes with No. 1 LSU at 7 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, a game that is expected to be close could be determined by field position, which might be determined by kickers, punters and return specialists.

Or the game could be determined by fake punts or field-goal attempts. Alabama already has run one of each this season. LSU has a big bag of tricks.

I really hope it don't come down to ST. If there is an exchange of 3-n-outs Bama will get backed up and make a short field for the Who. Bama needs to crank out at least 1 or 2 first downs each time they have the ball. If they can do that in the first half consistently the second half should be good for us.

I think we are pretty good on special teams. The exception is our punter can kick a high coverage kick but he can not punt it long enough to flip the field. We need to avoid 3 and outs. We need to make a few first downs even when we are forced to punt so we can pin them deep. LSU will have trouble driving the ball the length of the field on us. We need to make them go 70 yards or more and not give up a big play on every possession.
