the Grapevine is not the mountain that is normally associated with Bakersfield

Tehachapi is the one famous for the trucks getting a good "running start"
(runningaway) going into Bakersfield

cool song , but just wanted to point that out       Embarrassed       Laughing

they also have a women's prison there too  Tongue

the railroad pass that always got my attention was on Soldier Summit Utah
there was (use to be) a old railroad town about half way across the summit named
Thistle  ... until one day the whole town slid off the side off the mountain
if I remember right it was 21 miles up the pass and 21 miles down it

here is a list of some of the other passes in the USA
but they left off the most famous one  nicknamed "Cabbage" which is part of
the Blue Mountains in Oregon / Idaho
Cabbage from the top is like looking down out of an airplane window and will
put your pucker factor in the red part of the scale ...

Grade "nickname": Location: Grade %  / Length:

Sherman Hill just E of Laramie, WY 5% for 5 miles

The Sisters MM30WB / MM6 EB not posted

Parley Summit I-80 UT (WB) into Salt Lake 3-6% for 10 miles

Mont Eagle I-24 TN (EB) 6% for 4 miles

Sandstone I-64, Sandstone (EB) 7% for 5 miles

Cajon Pass I-15 S of Victorville 6% for 12 miles/scale

The Grapevine I-5, CA 6% for 5 miles

Donner Pass Reno/Sacramento I-80 (WB) 3-6% for 30 miles

Tehachapi US 58 4-6% for 14 miles

Black Mountain I-40, NC 6% for 5 miles

Sandstone Mt. (WV) 7% grade for 5 miles. Mandetory brake cool down before descending. Several truck escape ramps all downsloped, meaning they are gravel pits that swallow runaway trucks. At night it is a light show of fire off the brakes of downhill trucks. 7% grade means that for every 100 feet of descent the road elevation drops 7 feet.

they have a check station at the top of Black mountain N.C. like that too

intent is making the trucks stop at the top and wait their turn to go down

of course there is always that one dumbazz that don't heed the warning
signs saying "STOP for instructions"

"instructions ? I don't need no stinking instructions" !!!!

and they bail off and down they go ... that is until about
eight cop cars surround them and write them a ticket as long as
my arm ....

it's funny as hell  Laughing

Cajon pass in southern California is a mountain pass between the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California.

BNSF ( Burlington Norhtern Santa Fe ) triple tracked their mainline thru the
mountains. One slope is 2.2 % and the other is 3%. They have run away tracks as well. Norfolk Southern has run away tracks in the Blueridge Mountains in NC.

1% is huge for railroads. Those 4400 HP GE AC4400 engines and the EMD SD70ACe engines weight 430,000 pounds ( 215 tons ). The engines are a little over 80 feetlong from coupler to coupler. A 3% grade is almost like jacking up one end of thos engines 2.5 -3 feet.

Most freight trains weight 10,500 tons. Double stacks are usually less. Helper engines are used at the rear for braking and pushing and use distributed power.

Meaning they are controlled by the lead engine. Some have helpers in middle and rear. The modern AC diesels have so much traction effort they can break the best couplers. Break a train in half.

20 years or so ago they had a runaway that crashed and almost took out highway I-5.

Theses are pictures of the construction of the triple main line thru the mountains. There are many pictures at this link of the construction.
