First, LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu may well be the best defensive player in the country—he could be the best player on offense or defense. But how would we know?

With the other four candidates, the question is much simpler: Alabama's Trent Richardson and Wisconsin's Montee Ball both put up spectacular numbers.

But Richardson, playing in the SEC, achieved his numbers against far tougher competition, (USA Today's Jeff Sagarin, the leading power rankings expert, rates Alabama's schedule a whopping 14 points tougher than Wisconsin's.)

Clearly there was only one conference in the country where defense is taken seriously, and that's the Southeastern Conference.

Against LSU (ranked second, behind Alabama, in fewest points allowed per game), Mississippi State (19), Florida (25), Vanderbilt (26), Tennessee (35) and Arkansas (37)—not to mention the Big 10's Penn State (No. 5)—Richardson played against outstanding defenses in 7 of his team's 12 games, far more than Griffin and Luck combined.

In a perfect world, Alabama's Trent Richardson and LSU's Tyrann Mathieu would both be awarded big bronze trophies Saturday night.

But in the imperfect world we live in, the Heisman should go to Trent Richardson.

Any votes for Tyrann Mathieu will likely come out of MFBATR's pile. Sad

It's just a beauty contest this year.  Last year there was one truly outstanding candidate.  This year it's a mess.  If the ESPN experts are to be believed, the Heisman this year will go to the player who performed best the last week of the season and had the catchy name: RG3.  It sucks.

I thought character also played a part in determining the Heisman. If that's the case, Honey Huffer has no business being in the mix. The thing that gets me is through all this, no one is even mentioning his suspension for drug use.

And to think, I cheered for RG3 the first game of the year.  Undecided

Anybody else hear Danny Sheridan on PF yesterday talking about the Heisman?  He thought the last-week-of-the-season bias ruins the voting too.

No kidding. I'll agree that RG3 has played some great ball this year, but neither he, nor anyone else, has been more consistently spectacular than MFBATR. If you want to look at one game, Oklahoma hung 52 on Texas and they only lost 3 games.

Exactly.  I thought Heisman was about who contributed the most to their team's success.  He has made some dirty plays and he wasn't contirbuting at ALL when he was suspended.  The suspension was his SECOND time coming up for drugs, btw...it is LSU policy to only suspect after 2 or more times getting caught.  Makes me sick because if you take character into account, Cam the webcam watchin-laptop stealin- sidelines idiot acting fool shouldn't have gotten it.  I guess Cam broke the seal on that one!

Careful.  To be fair, remember that MI was suspended (for his fishing trip).  Not drugs, but suspension.

Who would look at the fishing trip incident as a blemish on MI's character? I think no one. Drug use is a totally different matter.
