You would think the ALAMO bowl would want a team that could mount a defense in their.game.

 Laughing
I think I would be embarrassed to play or coach defense for either of those teams.

These teams don't recruit enough decent athletes, so they put their best athletes on offense and the leftovers play D.

Seriously though, its really stomach-turning to hear all this emphasis on offense all the time now, with defense being treated as an after thought. As long as you can outscore the opposition, then you are fine. CPB and all of the old school coaches who have passed on are probably rolling in their graves over this crap. That's OK, though. The other schools can keep all their big scores; the SEC will continue to rack up the titles with smothering defenses. Maybe a light will click on in the heads of some of these coaches one day.

Here is the gist of my strategy, with maybe a few exceptions.  I spent maybe 10 or 15 minutes total making the picks.

1.  Is there an SEC team involved?  If yes, and the team is NOT Auburn, pick the SEC team.  If it is Auburn, pick the other team.
2.  Am I familiar with the teams?  If yes, then make an educated guess.
3.  Is one of the teams from the South?  If yes, pick the Southern team.
4.  Is the point spread close?  If yes, just go with the favorite.
5.  Is the point spread pretty big?  If yes, go with the underdog.
6.  If I make it to rule 6, just pick one of the teams at random.
So I'm guessing that you picked Northern Illinois over Arkansas State based on #2 or #6?   Undecided

One thing that has withstood the test of time is that "defense wins championships". Reference the SEC's BCS success domination if you need an example.

I forgot a rule.  In general I picked against teams that lost their coach.

Hey that looks great SC. Maybe I should use it next year, my old fashion way is not working this way. If the wind is blowing left pick the one on top and if the wind is blowing right pick the one on the bottom. How do I find the wind when I walk outside just pitch the leaves in the air. rofl, RTR!

Actually, to call those rules is quite a stretch.  It would be more accurate to describe them as "random thoughts that went through my mind while I made my bowl picks."

Yeah, I didn't consider that when I picked Arkansas State.

Losing the coach did enter my mind...that's why I picked against Southern Miss.  I did pick Arky State for whatever reason though.  I just assume they will want to win badly since a bowl trip is a treat for them.

Rutgers just put it on Iowa State pretty good. I guess Rutgers should play LSU for the BCSCG. Give me a break. The Big 12 is weak. It is showing up in the bowl games.
