The notion that Alabama would be better without one of its most talented players seemed like spin when Tony Mitchell was suspended.

After Alabama’s 68-50 victory at Auburn on Tuesday, spin looks a lot more like reality.

Sans Mitchell, Alabama (16-7) routed a team that had a 12-1 record at home, including a more competitive game against top-ranked Kentucky.

Sans Mitchell, guys like Charles Hankerson stepped up with 14 points, sinking three 3-pointers.

Take away Tony, and Alabama hardly looked like a team three days and 160 miles removed from a double-overtime victory over Ole Miss...

Give the Aub coach credit: 

“It had nothing to do with the officiating,” Auburn coach Tony Barbee said. “We just didn’t play well, and give Alabama credit.

“They came in here and played with a high level of confidence, and at the end of the day, it came down to toughness. We got out-toughed..”

He's still learning how to be an Aub; probably be reprimanded for saying that.

Biggest night for Hankerson. Couldn't have come at a better time since TL, LR, NJ, and AS failed to show offensively. But the "D" was solid and the barn eats 'em.

What we saw in the game against Auburn was what a lot of us have been saying for quite sometime, there is talent on this team but why isn't it showing. Bama didn't have a lights out performance but they did have a strong performance, the indication of all the talent was there as TM was suspended, the outside shots weren't falling, and Auburn had the momentum. CAG wasn't hesitant to go to the bench and that is when the game changed. Some of that recently unseen talent started to expose itself and Bama wins the game.

This was a game the team needed because it only proved that being on an ESPN highlight reel, or consistantly having a player get the ball and dribble until he shoots the ball. This was a TEAM effort as so many players had a big role in this win and that is exactly what this team needed, everyone can step up and make a difference. I thought Engstrom set the stage as he showed that he can be a part of the offense if only given the chance, kudos to him and the team. Roll Tide!!!

And one thing I saw last night was "inside-out play" (ball passed inside, then returned to the outside for open shots).  That likely contributed to the improved 3-point shooting.  I'm not saying that never happened before, but it was more evident last night than during any game I can remember.

 I doubt any Swede would like being called a viking.

Kudos to him, though, for playing well.  Indeed he scored, AND he played some excellent defense as the one-man team under the basket on full-court presses.

Actually, vikings came from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. The term viking was not a people group, it was an action. A viking was one who raided other lands. Swedish vikings mainly traveled to Russia and other parts of the east. Their fierceness in battle caught the attention of the Byzantine emperors and they incorporated the vikings into their personal defense force which became the famous verangian guard, the most famous military force in Constantinople. So Carl is descended from vikings. We need a cool nickname for him, like the Mighty Viking, or Verangian Terror, or something. Help me out here.

Speaking of, is there anyone else on this forum that is offended by the use of the term Viking? My ancestors were Norse, Vikings is derogatory and insinuates raping, pillaging, and general mischief.

The inside out game seemed to get going once Bama (Hankerson) started hitting some 3s.  That stretched the zone defense enough to allow some dribble penetration.  Without the 3s, the zone D sits back and makes the inside game difficult, which is why Bama has had such trouble with the zone.

This team reminds me of Saban's first year.  It is taking some work to get the older players to buy into the system.  I think Green has, but Mitchell is not there yet.  When CAG has only his players, the team effort will be better -- it is starting to get there now.

Lord save me from the PC police. If this person knew history then he would know that the Norsemen pillaged aand raped their way through Europe as well. In fact, both the Norsemen and the vikings were well known slave traders. If we want to be PC then he owes me reparations because his ancestors (the Norsemen) raped and pillaged my people (saxons and britons, the original inhabitants of the British Isles) and sold my ancestors into slavery. In fact, I think I am going to go stage a protest outside of the Minnesota Vikings football stadium. Let my people go.
