Good stuff.

Talk about it in Talk of Champions
Before the managers for the University of Alabama men's basketball team even had the Crimson Tide's gear packed for its exit from Greensboro, N.C., and the 2012 season, Anthony Grant had set the bar for the 2013 season.

Asked if making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years was going to lead to a return of Alabama as a fixture in the field of 68, Grant had a ready response.

"That's the goal," he said.

Devonta Pollard (6-7 small forward) has already been discussed, but his LOI would be huge news for our program.

With what we have now we need to recruit and season some help underneath. Another year of work will not hurt our young guys from this yeat. So I say the season after next will be the one. Not to write off next year, but I would guess that 2013 plays out much like this year-- hopefully without all the drama. But to reach the NCAA tourney 2 years in a row would be excellent progress and everyone needs to be patient and realistic.

It will be interesting to see what kind of program CAG will have for the players in the off season, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him implement a CNS 4th quarter for the team. I think the recruiting for this year is over unless Mitchell doesn't return. "If", and I use this word cautiously, Mitchell is allowed back on the team he will be a different person and it won't be a case of CAG letting him come back, it will be that he has earned the privilege of playing again.

I'm excited about next year if the players really work on their perimeter shooting, I think they can handle anything else already. Gueye is the key to helping in the middle, he has much better presence on the court than Engstrom, but I don't think he was ever in playing condition this year to be of much help. Engstrom will be like Eblen, there will be games where he will play a big role in coming off the bench. Coaches don't mind having a couple of players like them because they don't gripe about playing time as so many that sit on the bench do.

Hopefully there will be no offseason injuries and all players will come back healthy next year, it makes a difference whan all players can start the season practicing full speed. I'm already excitied about next year. Roll Tide!!

I think Bama is better next year.  But I agree with you, when these freshmen are juniors, with Releford and company as seniors, that will be the season to take Bama extremely seriously.

The big guys usually take longer to develop than the guards.  And while JMG will be missed, I think these guys we have will grow into their roles -- more natural physically at their position than JMG.

I'm glad Cecil is free now.  Good link.

I think the biggest improvement next year might be Lacey, who was limited in the early season by surgery and will have time to develop (and maybe heal).  We saw flashes of what he is capable of, and I think he will be one of the main guys next year.

I think Sweet 16 is a realistic goal for next year. However, the year after next should be the year our program arrives at the elite level.

The player that I think has the most room to improve is Randolph. He came out of Bob Jones HS as a pure shooter. He was a good player for us this year but his outside shoot was off all year. I think he will get it back. Lacey just needs to stay healthy. He is the 5 star we thought he would be.

We need a little more depth on the front line. I'm not counting on Mitchell being back. Without Mitchell Jacobs is the only solid player we have. The two 7 footers need to really improve to help us offensively. I don't know what recruiting is looking like but a JUCO transfer like Chris Hines was a couple of years ago would help a lot.

The most improvement we need starts at the top.  Our coaching staff has to do a better job of A) having an offense that our guys can execute and B) In game, especially end of game, situational plays. C) We have to find a coach that can help our big guys develop.

Does anybody remember a single game where we called timeout and ran an offensive set that got us an easy look?
How did we fare in close games?

For a million dollars, I expect more production.

Good point. We were 1-5 in games decided by 4 pts. or less. The team needs more heart in those situations and the coaches need to draw up better plays.

Sweet 16s azz.

I'm right with you on Randolph. He is dripping with potential. At any second he is libel to turn into 16 a game. Early on I was sure he was being intimidated by his own guys-- TM and JG. But he was also just a freshman in the SEC. He came out of his shell a couple of times but I am excited about him for next season.

Watch Jacobs add muscle and become a force for the SEC to reckon with. The Sweet 16 would be fun. RTR

I am so optimistic about this team it borders on the stupidly optimistic.  I really believe we can go 25-5 in the regular season and win the SEC Tourney (all of this WITH Mitchell). At least, a Sweet 16 appearance is within sight. We have 4/5 guys with the potential to be excellent outside shooters, Lacey, Randolph, Hankerson, Releford, & Cooper. If 3 of them develop a shot, then lookout, because that opens up the middle where Jacobs will eat their lunch. We really need one of our 7 footers to develop as an inside force, rebounding and blocking shots, something which is very doable. We still need another big body on the inside, though.

I think the offense is a work in progress and hopefully we will see better execution next year.

I hope the goal is more than just making the field. I am a supporter of Grant, but I sure hope his "goal" is more than just making the freakin tournament.  That would be like Saban saying his goal is to make a bowl game. Angry

Wow.  All this basketball talk, the season ends, and now you arrive.  But no RehireGottfried.com?     Grin

I do think Grant's ultimate goal is more than making the NCAA Tournament.  Bama has young talent that should be able to make a deep run in another two years.

I don't think it is CAG goal just to make the tournament. I think he has raised the bar. No one was satified with the one and done this year. We have upper level SEC talent coming back next year. We have 5 guys who will be in their second year and I think you will see a lot of improvement in their play. Releford and Steele will be the leaders and I think capable of doing a good job. I think the goal next year has to be Sweet 16 at a minimum. That is very possible with the players we are returning and Grant as the coach.

Welcome to the forum.

Glad to be here. Good to see familiar names.  I unfortunantly just found out about this site yesterday while talking to NALT about Taz passing.  Trust me, no rehiregottdouche web site from me. Bama made the right move canning his sorry scum arse.
