New Orleans Saints Head Coach Suspended For Bounty System by NFL

This is a big time suspension, but he deserved it.



The NFL levied severe penalties Wednesday against multiple members of the Saints organization for their participation or connection with the bounty system that was run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams between 2009 and 2011. Williams was suspended indefinitely

I agree something should have been done, but Belichick got a slap on the wrist for doing something that had a bearing on the outcome of games. He should have gotten the same IMO.

Certainly there were other teams with bounties.  This punishment may be deserved, but there must be others (who haven't come forward).

I think in the past you are right, but unfortunately for the Saints there is a new reality in the NFL and the idea of deliberately hurting players is out-the-window.

Some type of punishment is deserved, and perhaps Coach Payton's suspension is appropriate, but don't think for one moment that he is not going to have some influence on the team. Suspended or not, whoever on the staff fills in for the year will continue to run what CSP wants to run. Granted, some personnel decisions may be affected, but it isn't like he is leaving the country, and probably won't even leave NO for that matter. No, the Saints won't be bottom dwellers, and I don't think that they will even be out of playoff contention (they might not make it, but the still will contend), not as long as that Brees guy is at QB. As far as Gregg Williams, I was only moderately impressed with him. His schemes gave up a ton of yardage and points (which is what killed the Saints this year anyway). Even during the championship season it was about taking advantage of turnovers and a few key stops here and there, not dominating defense.

I really don't see the Saints making the playoffs. A suspended coach can't be at practice, can't contact players, or participate in the team in any manner. Plus, they play in the same division with the Falcons, Bucs, & Panthers, which is stiff competition. Other teams they must play include:

Giants
Broncos
49ers
Eagles
Packers
Chargers

Even with their coach it would be a tough road to hoe, but without him, I don't see them overcoming this. If they can go 9-7 it would be impressive.

It depends on how good the interim coach is and can the players push themselves that extra little bit and turn this into an us against them situation and still win. It will really be interesting to see what happens. I see the Falcons winning the division (I hope).

There are a lot of retirees now that are suffering from all of the concussions that they received in their playing years and that is what makes me wonder, what is the future of football. When I read the article about the Saints I just wondered what this might do to the game, how many rules adjustments would it bring on to affect the contact of the sport. It could be a good thing that the Saints got caught but it could also alter the game of football that we once knew.

This. Football has always been a violent sport, and in the past there have been many players who were deliberately trying to hurt other players. But when you see players like Al Toon who can't look into a light because of the pain, or a big lineman who can't walk now because of his mangled knees, you realize that these men have very poor quality of life because of the damage to their bodies. And with athletes being faster, bigger, and stronger than they have ever been, then the damage they are doing to their bodies is exponentially increased. Football is a contact sport, and there will always be injuries. But it should never be intentional, because in the end, it is just a game, and there is much more to life than football, like being able to play with your children and grandchildren, or even being able to live to see your grandchildren. As for the ridiculous argument that everyone does it, you could make the same argument about bribing politicians with kickbacks. Everyone does it, so why do we punish the ones that are caught. We should just look the other way and let it happen. It's still morally and legally wrong, and it if you are caught you deserve to be punished. It's a childish argument to say that everyonre does it. So I will respond like my mom used to say. If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you do it?

According to this morning's news, the punishment was more about lying and covering the bounty system than it was about its existence.

If even if that is true, I am still not convinced that a one-year suspension for CSP is warranted. 6-8 games and a hefty fine would have been more in the ballpark. Gregg Williams perhaps warrants more, but I still don't think indefinite suspension is called for here. Look, I'm not saying that a bounty program is a great thing to do; I'm just saying that I am not sure that the punishment here fits the crime. This isn't the off-the-field hijinks of Pacman Jones.
