ESPN Sources: Bobby Petrino out as coach

The university has called an 8:15 p.m. ET press conference at which time athletic director Jeff Long will announce Petrino will not be back.

Assistant head coach Taver Johnson had been placed in charge of the program while Petrino was on leave and sources told ESPN.com's Low that Johnson will remain in charge. The sources said that Long has informed the coaching staff that he would like to keep the assistants in place through the rest of spring practice and then open up the coaching search to see what options are available at this point.

Wow, I have to say I am surprised. I didn't think Long would pull the trigger. What is most interesting to me is that they want the rest of the staff to stay on through spring practice and

I'm not surprised at all. When you look at Bama's past history, Mike Dubose, Mike Price, Wimp Sanderson, and Mark Gottfried. Did any of them get any forgiveness of what they did, no, and Petrino didn't deserve any better either.

It's a sad ending for a young coach that had nothing but a bright future in front of him at Arkansas, but a bad decisision has taken care of all of that but the biggest loss is his family.  Sad

I watched the presser.  The AD was very forthcoming. 

Once the AD learned that Petrino was having an affair before she was hired (and he served on the search committee), it was pretty much over.  He already knew Petrino lied to him about the accident and covered the affair.  Then when he learned of the payment ("gift") of $20,000 to the "young lady" by Petrino, it made his decision easier.
