Alabama takes 1st place in stroke play portion of NCAA golf championships

Alabama staved off hard-charging UCLA to finish the stroke play portion of the NCAA men's golf championships in first place.

In its third of three rounds at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, the Crimson Tide posted a 3-over, 287, to finish two strokes ahead of the Bruins at 7-over, 859, for the tournament.

Alabama will be one of eight teams vying for the national title over the next three days of match play. The Crimson Tide, which will have the top seed, will be gunning for the program's fourth national title of the 2011-12 academic year.

At one time I checked and UCLA had a 3 stroke lead. Bama bounced back quickly and held on to the lead. Looks like it was a gutty performance for Bama. San Diego State was -5 at one time in today's round, but is currently even for the day. Nothing has changed on the leaderboard in a while so I'm wondering if SDU, Texas and Oregon will have to finish in the morning because of darkness? At any rate, no one is under par for the day.

As yesterday, playing into a heavy wind calls for you to slow your swing and play the ball back in your stance. Slowing down your swing is especially counter- intuitive and hard for a young player, pumped full of adrenaline.
